i) Divide 35 pencils between Neha and Amit in the ratio 3:2. ii) 5 kg 400g in the ratio 2:7 . iii) Rs. 180 in the ratio 4:5.

Let x be the constant ratio:

3x + 2x = 5x

5x = 35

x = 7

Find each of their share:

2x = 2(7) = 14

3x = 3(7) = 21

.

Question ii

5 kg 400 g = 5400 g

.

Let x be the constant ratio:

2x + 7x = 9x

9x = 5400

x = 600

.

Find each share:

2x = 2(600) = 1200 g = 1 kg 200 g

7x = 7(600) = 4200 g = 4 kg 200g

.

Answer: The ratio 2 : 7 = 1 kg 200g : 4 kg 200 g

Question iii

Let x be the constant ratio:

4x + 5x = 9x

9x = 180

x = Rs 20

.

Find each share:

4x = 4(20) = Rs 80
