\frac{x {}^{ - 1} y {}^{ - 1} }{x {}^{ - 1}  + y {}^{ - 1} }

then divide both numerator and denominator by

 {x}^{ - 1} y {}^{ - 1}

then,

 \frac{1}{ \frac{1}{ {y}^{ - 1} } +  \frac{1}{ {x}^{ - 1} }  }

then,

 \frac{1}{y + x}
