Menstrual Cycle
- A characteristic feature occuring in mammals.
- Cyclic changes occur in females and the cycle is repeated with periodicity of 28 days.
- These changes are accompanied with loss of blood, abdominal pain, etc.
- It is divided into four phases viz. menstrual phase, proliferative phase, ovulatory phase and secretory phase.
- This cycle is under hormonal control.
- The above diagram shows the role of hormones in each phase of menstrual cycle.

- About once a month, females who have gone through their puberty will experience menstrual bleeding.
- Bleeding usually lasts for 3-8 days.
- From the first day of one period to the first day of the next period normally changes from 21-35 days.
- It is controlled by a complex orchestra of hormones, produced by two structures in the brain, the pituitary gland, and the hypothalamus along with the ovaries.
- It includes several phases.
- The exact timing of the cycle phases is a little bit different for every woman and can change over time.
