The speaker doubts if he/she will ever come back to the same spot because of how one path leads to another. By the time one wants to go back, one has gone way too ahead to be able to return comfortably.

The same holds good for life too. One decision leads to another and then yet another. Even if you want to undo a particular decision taken in the past, you cannot.
