Concept

A fraction is a piece or section of any amount that makes up a whole, where a whole might be any number, a certain amount, or an object. In the case of the pizza, for instance, we could use the expression 1/8 to indicate that we are referring to one part out of 8 equally sized pieces.

Given

number of chocolates eaten = 1/3

number of chocolates left = 16

Find

how many chocolates were present at first.

Solution

let the total number of chocolates be x.

given, the number of chocolates eaten = 1/3×x

now the remaining chocolates left = x ₋ (1/3 × x) = 16

⇒  x ₋ (1/3 × x) = 16

x ₋ x/3 = 16

3x - x/3 = 16

2x/3 = 16

2x = 48

x = 48/2

x = 24

hence the total number of chocolates present at the beginning were 24.
