When ferrous sulphide (iron pyrites ) reacts with a sulphuric acid, the hydrogen sulphide gas is obtained which has a characteristic odour of rotten egg.

FeS+H2SO4→FeSO4 +H2S↑

This is laboratory method for the preparation of hydrogen sulphide and is carried out in kipps apparatus.
