What is Active voice?

It is called Active because here the verb suggests the action. Here the Subject of the sentence, whether a person or thing, is involved in an act. In Active Voice, the Subject of the Verb is the doer of the action and thus active.

Read these sentences carefully.

  • I help my friends
  • Somebody picked my pocket

In the above sentences, I and Somebody are the Subjects. They are active. They have done

something - help and picked. Hence these Verbs are in Active Voice

What is Passive Voice?

It is called Passive because the person or thing denoted by the Subject is not at all Active but Passive. It is not involved in action but action is done to it. In other words, it is acted upon.

Read these sentences carefully.

  • My friends were helped by me.
  • My pocket was picked by somebody.

In these sentences, the Subjects are my friends and my pocket. None of them is active. They are merely the receivers of the actions done by others i.e. by me and by the somebody. Hence these actions or Verbs are in the Passive Voice.
