There are many answers to this question and as the colour coding is not universal. A brand might use the exact same colours and map it to different terminals. If you have an apple earphone then it will be pretty standard and you can lookup in internet for colour coding.
The best foolproof method to determine the colour and corresponding terminals is to test it.
The testing is pretty simple, it takes 5 just minutes.
Follow these steps:
After you have exposed the wires from rubber insulation, you need to burn the wires slightly to remove the invisible enamel coating over the wires. To do that just light a match stick and bring the wires towards the flame and just blow it off so that only a small part of the wire is exposed of the coating.
Do remember that the colour won’t be visible after you burn the wire.
If your earphones have a mic then you’ll have 4 wires, otherwise it’s 3. For now let’s assume that it has a mic.
Insert you 3.5 mm jack into a phone or laptop and keep playing some music.
While the music is playing carefully take one wire and hold it against the ground. You can firmly press the wire against the ground terminal with the wire in between. Again the ground might vary depending upon the brand. My earphones are from Xiaomi and the illustration in the middle worked for me.
Put on your earphones/headphones. After wire is in place of ground carefully bring one wire at a time to either right or left (You can use any of them as both of them will get same voltage and signal).
If you did not hear any music change the ground. Select another wire and place it against the ground. Repeat the step 6.
If you hear music then make a note of the following. Colour of the wire held against ground and wire used for left/right and which side the music was coming from.
That’s it now you know which one is Ground, left, right. The remaining one is for Mic.
PS: it's an extremely tiring task, and only try if you love your earphones and they are costly. Highly suggest that you buy a replacement Jack because it is very hard to solder with the original earphone jack.
