Answer:
The reasons Anne gives for this statement is that both she and Peter lack a mother. His is too superficial, loves flirting and does not trouble much about what he thinks and though Anne’s mother does bother about her, she lacks sensitiveness and real motherliness. Peter and she both wrestle with their inner feelings, they are rather uncertain and really too sensitive to be roughly treated. If Anne is roughly treated her reaction is to get away from it, hide her feelings and throw her weight about the place. Peter also shuts himself up, hardly talks at all, becomes quiet, day dreams and in this way is able to carefully conceal his true self.
