Yes they sleep . Queen fire ants fall into relatively long, deep sleeps and kip for an average of nine hours every day. By contrast, workers sleep just half as much and get to rest by taking hundreds of short power naps. This division of rest may help explain why queens live for years, while worker ants typically only live for months.Since ants live underground, their sleep patterns are not affected by light and dark. Instead, workers just nap when they're tired. And they get tired a lot. A worker fire ant takes about 250 naps a day, each averaging one minute in length. However, since we're usually only awake during the day, it's easier to take note of ants that are also more active during the day. However, unfortunately, most ant species are more active at night. For instance carpenter ants, one of the most problematic ant species in Ontario, is primarily a nocturnal ant . Although ants can be seen in various places from spring to autumn, they go into hibernation in the winter. In addition, from spring to autumn, many ants are seen to come from, and go into, the entrances of their nests, but these entrances are closed in winter and no ants are seen to come from there.Ants are masters of overwintering, or waiting out the winter season. When cold air arrives, ants' body temperatures drop dramatically and their movements become sluggish. Ants respond by seeking out warm places, such as deep soil, under rocks or under the bark of trees.
