I have learnt how to calculate the work done on an object when the displacement is in the direction of the applied force. But if the displacement is not in the direction of the applied force, how do we calculate the amount of work done?

1.work=force × displacement

2.the positive sign for force is used when the displacement of the object is in the direction of the applied force. 3

3. therefore, when the displacement is not in the direction of the applied force, the negative sign is used for the amount of force.

4. eg. F= -4 N and S(displacement) = 5 meters

therefore W = -F×S

                    = -4×5

                   =  -20 Joule
