ORIGIN AND HISTORY:

Originated in India and then spread to Persia and then to the rest of world. Based on the four units of military of those times- infantry, cavalry, chariotry and elephantry. (Wikipedia) However, it is an indoor game with a chequered board and 64 pieces. During the olden days, in Persia it was a game played by the royalty, but in the modern day, it is a very popular game played by the common man across the globe.

 

ADVANTAGES:

Since the game involves strategic moves and planning, it is a game for the mind. It improves analytical and futuristic thinking. It is known to improve attention and concentration. Being a common game, you can always get a partner to play with. It can also be played online, where you can invariably find someone to play with. It is an indoor game and hence can be played in all weathers and at all times of the day.

 

DISADVANTAGES:

·         You need at least two people to play face to face.

·         The game can get monotonous and long.

·         It can become addictive.

·         It is a little complex, with different moves for different pieces.

 

OVERALL:

Your interest in the game decides how much time you want to devote to the game. It can be played solely for enjoyment, as a mental exercise or for professional competitions. In any case, there is a lot of scope for both learning and enjoyment.
