The revenue that had been fixed was so high that the zamindars found it difficult to pay. Anyone who failed to pay the revenue lost his zamindari. Numerous zamindaris were sold off at auctions organised by the Company.
High revenue demand: The fixed revenue demand was high as the Government was not supposed to take its share in any increase of revenue. Zamindars' authority diminished: The troops of the Zamindars were dispersed and their custom duties were abolished.
The company feared that if agricultural prices rose in future then it wouldn't be able to claim the revenue on increased income of peasants. The zamindars were never able to pay all the revenue demands. The consequence was that a number of zamindars were auctioned.
