The night is cold and damp. You can hear the wind howling around the building; hear thick and heavy raindrops pummeling the window panes. Inside it is warm. The flickering candles emit a soft and comfortable light. Colorful images flash across the television screen as the newsreader presents the headlines in a low murmur. You sip your wine, your eyes fixed on the screen. Suddenly you whip around. You have seen something moving out of the corner of your eye. But there's no one there. And how can there be? After all, you are alone.

It's a phenomenon that has happened to all of us at least once. But why does it happen? Is there somebody there? Or is our mind playing mean tricks? Parapsychology, the scientific study of the paranormal, examines these questions and tries to answer them on a psychological and neuroscientific basis.

Answer:

I heard a window shatter downstairs. I was terrified because I was alone in the house suddenly something came crashing to the floor, like a grocery bag of heavy cartons and boxes. After the initial shock, I got up, put the lights on and stepped through my wide open 3-foot pocket door into the dining area of the long open room which has the kitchen at the other end. Although this sound clearly emanated from the kitchen, I examined every room carefully and looked in closets throughout my 1950's ranch house. Nothing out of place. A little info: My attic is sealed off with only insulation up there, and there is a basement used for storage. I live alone, no pets.

I hear a lot of "house noises" that seem typical for older homes, such as creaks, very loud pops or cracks always coming from the living room, pipe noises, etc, But this was nothing like that, and now I'm beginning to wonder about the half dozen or so basement crashes I've heard since moving in a couple years ago, all at night when I've been in bed, sometimes just watching TV, none of which I could ever understand but tried to reason maybe involved a mouse knocking things over. But they were loud and most as if some bowls were knocked to the floor., sometimes with metal sounds. I would look around down there the next day or so; no evidence of animals or rodents, and nothing out of place. The last time, a few months ago, was very loud, sounded like an enormous stack of boxes toppling over, and was so scary I had my DD look when she came over the next day. Like the other times, nothing seemed disturbed. I had sorta put these incidents out of my mind.

Tonight's was the first time the crash was on this floor. I don't feel particularly afraid, but I am shaken, and maybe typing this as a way of avoiding closing up my laptop and being in the dark - well, maybe to avoid feeling scared. This was a very loud noise tonight.
