The excerpt has been taken from the lesson - The Playboy of the Western World written by J.M. Synge.

The line has been used to refer the act of Christy when he attacks his father.

Christy's father was a filthy man and he treats him very casually. Christy does not like this attitude of his and he laments his father for this behaviour. His father forces him to marry Casey, a widow and Christy was against it.

In an act of rage, his father picks up a scythe and Christy leaps to the side. He turns around and hits his father on his skull. He stretches him out and he hits him at his Adam's apple with the chicken bone.
