Answer:

Explanation:

Plaster of Paris in contact with moisture (water) changes to solid hard mass, gypsum. Therefore, it gets wasted. Hence it should be stored in moisture proof containers. a powdery mass, absorbs water (moisture) to form a hard solid known as gypsum.Uses :It is commonly used to precast and hold parts of ornamental plasterwork placed on ceilings and cornices. It is also used in medicine to make plaster casts to immobilize broken bones while they heal, though many modern orthopedic casts are made of fibreglass or thermoplastics.

Plaster of Paris :

  • Chemical formula -

CaSO_{4} ½ H_{2}O

  • Chemical name - Calcium Sulphate Hemi hydrate

Preperation :

  • It is prepared by heating gypsum.

CaSO_{4} 2 H_{2}O → CaSO_{4}½H _{2}O + 1 ½ H_{2}O

  • It is prepared in the presence of heat(373 K).
  • 60° heat is released when treated with water.

Uses :

  1. For making ganesh idols
  2. dustless chalk pieces
  3. for curing fractured bones
  4. ceiling decorations

★ It is always stored in dry conditions in order to restrict it from reacting with water.

If it reacts with water, it becomes hard as gypsum.

In order to prevent it from changing to gypsum, it is kept in dry conditions.
