Adjectives - Les Adjectifs



The placement of most adjectives in French is after the noun: un chat miaulant, une abeille travailleuse, etc. There is a small group of adjectives, however, that normally precede the noun. These adjectives may be categorized as adjectives of Beauty, Age, Numbers Goodness, and Size (BANGS).





Beauty beau (belle), beautiful bon (bonne), good joli (jolie) pretty

Tu as vu ce beau tapis ? Quelle jolie femme!



Age jeune, young vieux (vieille, vieil), old

C'est un jeune homme Regardes les vieux arbres



Number premier (première), first deuxième, second troisième, third

Nicolas est le premier enfant de la famille



Goodness mauvais (mauvaise), bad nouveau (nouvelle), new

Tu as mauvaise mine Voici mon nouvel appartement



Size petit (petite), little grand (grande), tall, big gros (grosse), big, fat

autre, other

C'est une grande maison C'est un gros bébé Il veut une autre pomme




BEAU, NOUVEAU, VIEUX:


Beau, nouveau, and vieux have irregular forms. Note the special forms in the masculine singular when they precede a word that begins with a vowel or a silent h.

The adjectives which precede the noun must agree in number and gender with the noun they modify (see the regular rule for adjective formation). Be aware that changing the position of some adjectives may change their meaning.

Regarde la belle dame blonde. Elle promène son bon petit chien.

Ils ont des nouveaux livres




Des changes to de when you have an adjective that precedes a plural noun.



Pour avoir de jolies fleurs, il faut les arroser tous les deux jours.

Cette blonde a de beaux yeux verts.
