I know that water vapour is the most potent greenhouse gas present in our atmosphere but what i haven't been able to get my head around is if it is the most potent greenhouse gas by virtue of its volume in the atmosphere or because it has the ability to trap infrared radiation the most when compared to gases such as NO2 and methane.

Answer:

Greenhouse gas, any gas that has the property of absorbing infrared radiation (net heat energy) emitted from Earth's surface and reradiating it back to Earth's surface, thus contributing to the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapour are the most important greenhouse gases.
