Given info : light travels with a velocity 2.8 × 10^8 m/s in a medium. on entering second medium its velocity becomes 1.4 × 10^8 m/s.

To find : The refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first medium is...

solution : refractive index of a medium is the ratio of velocity of light in vacuum to the velocity of light in that medium.

in short, refractive index of a medium ∝ 1/velocity of light in that medium.

so refractive index of 2nd medium with respect to first medium = refractive index of 2nd medium/refractive index of first medium = velocity of light in the 1st medium/velocity of light in the 2nd medium

= (2.8 × 10^8 m/s)/(1.4 × 10^8 m/s)

= 2

Therefore the refractive index of 2nd medium with respect to 1st medium is 2.
