Racial prejudice is a major theme in the Merchant of Venice. however, Jessica is portrayed as an exception. use examples from the text to demonstrate how Jessica is shown to be different from her father and others of her community.

When Jessica runs away she is extravagant in spending fourscore ducats at a sitting and exchanging a turquoise ring for a monkey. Though Jessica is a part of the bloodline of Shylock she says that she is not of his manners of character. She is shown different because she elopes herself with a Christian who is her love Lorenzo. She is portrayed as a very intelligent and cunning and practical from the point of view of taking the wealth from her father while eloping but extremely impractical in being a spendthrift and romantic in her love for Lorenzo. She seems to be an ambiguous character who is a rebel to the Jewish community but at the same time she seems to be very frivolous, pleasure-loving and childish.
