I still remember that dark and gloomy night. it was raining heavily outside. As I was scared to sleep alone in my room, my mother stayed with me till I fell asleep.

Then suddenly a strange noise woke me up. I found myself alone in the room. I gathered courage and opened my eyes to look through the window. The only thing I saw was a strange shadow dancing near my window with its eyes wide open. I started screaming with fear.

My parents came running to my room and found me crying. When they asked me, I told them about the strange noise and the shadow.

After listening to my story, my father looked out the window and started laughing. He hugged me and holding my hands brought me near the window. I was still very scared to look through the window.

Gathering courage, I opened my eyes and looked. What I saw, made me laugh too. It was the old tree outside my window. Its branches were making the noise because of the strong winds outside, and its leaves were forming the dancing shadows. As for the eyes, they belonged to an owl sitting on the tree!

I felt very foolish. I promised my parents that I would be braver and stronger in future.

A story using the given prompt has been written below.

Explanation:

The Thing At The Window

Looking out the window, I was shocked to see something lurking in the shadows. What my eyes were showing me left me in disbelief. In the shadow, a tall man-like figure could be seen lurking. Whatever it was, that man didn't look human at all. It was staring at me with bulging eyes and dark circles under them. I didn't see a nose on him, but I could be mistaken. Initially, I thought it was just a trick of the eye. After a few minutes, I realized they weren't.

Moving up the tree's trunk, the shadow became more pronounced. My sister's room was on the third floor, so I could see it coming up the stairwell. When she was a little girl, she was slumbering peacefully. After a while, I started to think about her again. But then I jumped out of bed and ran into her room, following my instincts. While she was sleeping, I went into her room to see if the window had been locked. Fortunately, that was the case. This thing was staring at me as if it was enraged at me when I opened the curtains. Afterwards, I tucked my younger sister into bed and called my mother. After checking our rooms and the outside, she made sure there were no frightening sights to be found. So, she told me it was a nightmare because she didn't think I was telling the truth.

An officer knocked on our door early the next morning. The door was unlocked by my mother. On my way to the basement, I noticed my mother's face was expressionless. There had been a child's murder just seven blocks away from where we lived later that day.

I explained to the officer what I had seen the night before. Police had received numerous reports from other children who claimed to have seen a man-like figure peering out the window at them. When I told my mother about the man, she now believed everything I said. I was also relieved that no harm had come to us. I  thank God every day for saving me and my sister from that terrifying night.
