Given : 5 years ago father and son age ratio was 3 : 1

and 15 years later  father and son age ratio will be 2 : 1

To Find : Current ages

Solution:

Current Father age = p years

Current Son age = q  years

5 year ago Father age = p - 5 years

5 year ago Son age = q - 5 years

(p - 5)/(q - 5) = 3/1

=> p - 5 = 3q - 15

=> p = 3q  - 10  ...Eq1

15 year later Father age = p + 15 years

15 year later Son age = q + 15 years

(p + 15)/(q + 15) = 2/1

=> p + 15 = 2q  + 30

=> p = 2q  + 15  ...Eq2

Equate p from Eq1 and Eq2

3q - 10 = 2q + 15

=> q = 25

p = 2q  + 15

=> p = 2(25) + 15  = 65

Hence Current ages are 65 and 25 years

Verification:

5 years ago  60 : 20  = 3 : 1

15 years later  80 : 40 = 2 : 1
