I like going with my father to the bank. I find it interesting to notice how things work in a bank. On Monday, I had study leave and I joined him when he went to the bank. My father was busy depositing cheques and was also talking to teller.

I was looking around observing people moving around and doing their work. Just then, I saw two suspicious looking men enter the bank. I also noticed a bulge in their side. I was not happy with their looks. I slowly slid around the counter where my father was standing and went to the back where I had noticed the security guard going earlier.

The moment I was away from sight of the two men, I rushed to the guard and told him about the two men who had just come into the bank. Though I was young the guard trusted my word and became alert and asked me to stay put. He moved forward cautiously behind the counters to the front of the bank.

I could not see much after that. But I was told that the guard accosted the two men from behind before they could act and called the police.

I learnt the value of observation and alertness that day.

  • One day I went to a bank with my father. I saw two armed men entering the bank and I thought that they were robbers. I was so scared that I ran out and told my father that the robbers were coming.
  • My father, who was a policeman, said that the robbers were security guards and that I should stay where I was. But as I watched the guards open the money bags, I could not believe what I was seeing. I watched my father take the money from the robbers. I was so angry that I shouted at my father: “You too are a policeman!”
  • But my father said that this was a job for the police and that he would not let me join the police force. He said that he was going to take me with him to find a job to work at the police station and that I could not be a policeman. I asked him why he said such a thing and he said that he was afraid I would get into trouble.
  • I asked if the police would arrest robbers and he said that he did not know but he was sure that they would. I asked him why he thought that and he said that he was sure because the policemen were different from the robbers. I asked him how he knew this and he said that he knew this because he had read about it in the newspaper.
  • I said that I did not understand. My father then said that if I did not understand, then I should not have gone to the bank.
