"Met" is a transitive verb.

A transitive verb is a verb which requires an objects for them to be complete.

Transitive verbs cannot be used without objects as then the sentence will not be complete.

eg. i caught a cold.

If we just write "i caught" it won't make sense.

On the other hand intransitive verbs do not require an object to act upon.

eg. they jumped.

The verb in the sentence does not require an object to make sense, and each verb can end a sentence on its own.

The verbs can even make one word sentences.

eg. Run!

As "met" requires the little cottage girl and needs the object hence it's a transitive verb.
