i) Name the largest part of the alimentary canal.

Ans - In the entire alimentary canal, the Small Intestine is the largest part which is around 6 m - 7.5 m and narrow with a average diameter of 4 cm. This looks like a tubular coiled pipe that runs in the abdomen. It is differentiated into three sub-parts:-

  • Duodenum
  • Jejunum
  • Ileum

The inner wall of Intestine consists of many finger like projectctions called villi and more smaller microvilli, which increases the surface area for the absorption of food.

ii) How is the small intestine designed to absorb digested food?

Ans- The main function of Small Intestine is the absorption of food. The absorption of digested food occurs mainly through the surface of villi and microvilli. There are nearly 3 to 4 million villis present in our Intestine. The Villi have bllod capillaries and lymph vessels.

The wall of Small Intestine also have many intestinal glands which helps in the final broke down or digestion of all kinds of nutrients like fats, peptides, lactose, maltose etc. The glands secrets enzymes like Intestinal Amylase, Intestinal Maltase etc.
