       Sydney Carton is a very dynamic character in the novel A Tale of Two Cities. He first appears as a lazy, alcoholic attorney who doesn’t even have the smallest amount of interest in his own life. “Mr. Carton’s manner was so careless as to be almost insolent” (Dickens, 65). He describes his existence as a great waste of life and takes every opportunity to prove that he cares for nothing and no one. In chapter 6, when Carton is drinking with Stryver and says, “I had no chance for my life but in rust and repose” (Dickens, 56) Basically what Carton is saying in this quote is that he had no chance in life but to sit back and waste away and concludes that it is Stryver’s fault.
