Science : A Boon or a Bane

Modern era is the era of science.Today, Science is universally dominated . There is hardly any corner of human life, where the light of science has not reached. Science has affected every area of our life. We have to resort to the invention of science for smallest needs and works. Science has brought revolutionary changes in human life and the infinite powers that science has provided to humans are really amazing.

Man has made many inventions in every field of life through his wisdom and strength. Some time before, his imagination was also impossible. Today, the daily routine of human beings comes from science, So, the end also happens with the advancement of science. The power of science has made man the lord of the earth, sea, and sky. Where there was nothing contrary to nature's wrath, there nature has now become a human servant. Science has made human life more tolerable and pleasant.

Many tools to make physical life happy are accessible only with the help of science. Iron, cement is very simple thing for the house, because of science, new machines have been invented, which has got rid of the work of labor as well as the unpleasant work and boasting of the mind. The work that was done over the years, it now ends in a few days. It has not made easy paths in inaccessible valleys, has converted the deserters into a mercury-colored land

Science is a curse or boon its decision depends on us. It depends on our discretion that we use scientific inventions for public welfare or misuse it for public purpose. Just like a knife killer's death becomes dormant and the tool of life in the hands of a doctor, in the same way is also science.

“This is a small step for me but a great leap for mankind”. These are the words of Neil Armstrong , the first man who set foot on moon in 1969.Since then man has made tremendous progress in the space explorations which is only a fragment of the vast ocean of science.

Science as a systematic study has come to the door of common man and it is the main reason behind the technological and scientific development of humans. The economy of a country soars or plummets according to the scientific knowledge.

Maldives was in the grip of Tsunami in 2004. There have been earth quakes in the densely populated areas of Indonesia. Volcanoes erupt in the fragile areas of Japan. There have been hurricanes in America one in every fortnight. But science has come to the rescue of humans in almost all these cases. It has brought succour to the suffering during such catastrophes whether it was man-made or natural.

Science grows day by day and new vistas open up. Microbiology as a new branch of science, for instance, has come to solve the problems of man in medicine and health. With its help, new vaccines and medicines are invented and tested. In addition to the advances in microbiology, we have also been able to make progress in other health sciences. A few years ago surgeons were at a loss to perform operations because they did not have effective anesthetics. However, today open heart surgery is a common phenomenon thanks to the break through initiated by Christian Bernard.

The world has shrunk due to the development in the field of transport and communication. Today we are able to watch events live that happens in every nook and corner of the world. The distance from the time man invented the first bicycle to the age of jet planes is so short. The day when he would have his breakfast in Los Angles and supper on moon is not so distant.

In spite of the achievements, we hardly see the sword of Damocles in the form of scientific tragedies hanging over mankind. Alfred Nobel who invented dynamite was sad and shocked when people used it for mass destruction. Tragedies in nuclear proliferation and space explorations pile up. Millions of dollars are wasted every year on such futile work. There was a tragedy in Bhopal, India, due to gas leakage in a nuclear station. As a result of the Atom Bombs dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan , the children born there are still disabled and crippled.

Thus, we learn a moral lesson that science is a good servant but a bad master. Cloning and AIDS are eye openers. The day we lose sight of the values, science will make us slaves. We do not want a society where progress is a liability. Or that is not at least what science aims at.
