Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) (or Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) or Clean India Mission in English) is a campaign in India that aims to clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of India's cities, smaller towns, and rural areas. The objectives of Swachh Bharat include eliminating open defecation through the construction of household-owned and community-owned toilets and establishing an accountable mechanism of monitoring toilet use. Run by the Government of India, the mission aims to achieve an Open-Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, by constructing 90 million toilets in rural India at a projected cost of ₹1.96 lakh crore (US$30 billion).[1] The mission will also contribute to India reaching Sustainable Development Goal Number 6 (SDG 6).

The campaign was officially launched on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is India's largest cleanliness drive to date with 3 million government employees, school students, and college students from all parts of India participating in 4,041 statutory cities, towns and associated rural areas. Modi has called the campaign "Satyagrah se Swachhagrah" (लघु फिल्म सत्याग्रह से) in reference to Gandhi's “Champaran Satyagraha” launched on 10 April 1917.[2]
The mission contains two sub-missions: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan ("Gramin" or rural), which operates under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation; and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban), which operates under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.[3][4][5][6]
As part of the campaign, volunteers, known as Swachhagrahis, or "ambassadors of cleanliness", have promoted indoor plumbing and the Community Approaches to Sanitation (CAS) at the village level.[2] Other non-governmental activities include national real-time monitoring and updates from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as The Ugly Indian, Waste Warriors and SWaCH Pune (Solid Waste Collection and Handling) that are working towards its ideas of Swachh Bharat.[7]

One of the stark different we see between India and western countries is cleanliness, why their cities are so clean and well maintained. We need to catch up with them and what is what the today’s topic is. Good morning everybody, today I will be talking about one of the most ambitious projects of our PM Narendra Modi and that is “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. This campaign is very dear to our PM.

Though it not the first time that Indian government tried to launch the Clean India campaign. In 1999, the government of India launched the “Total Sanitation Campaign” which was later renamed as “Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan” by then prime minister Manmohan Singh. But, his time under the label of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” PM Modi made it a national priority. It was an unexpected move, no one could have imagined a prime minister of world biggest democracy will give that much importance to cleanliness. We, Indians kind of used to being a dirty country. We see it everywhere but we ignore. We blame the government, system for unavailability of infrastructure. PM Modi made it a national level campaign and urged the fellow citizens to take part. He himself took the broom in hand cleaned the road. Some may see it as a marketing or political stunt, but what it did was it made us think about cleanliness.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has made a huge impact on the cleanliness and sanitation scenario in India and the progress statistics of the campaign are improving rapidly. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign has its own official website and app where one can track the progress of the campaign. As we speak 31,408,280 household toilets are built, 143,491 villages / 79 districts / 3 states are open defecation free. Various politicians, celebrities, actors and sports personnel participated in the campaign and promoted it in their capacity. Famous people like Sachin Tendulkar, Kamal Hasan, Anil Ambani, Virat Kohli, Priyanka Chopra and more took a broom and cleaned the roads. PM Modi did a very good marketing of this campaign. He dreams India to be a clean country by 150th Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti by constructing 12 million toilets in rural India.

The primary goal of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan is making India Open Defecation Free(ODF) till 2019. Swacch Bharat Abhiyan is the largest cleanliness and sanitation campaign and the best part is that more than 3 million government employees, as well as school and college students, have participated in the campaign. The aim of the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan campaign is to clean India’s 4041 cities and towns with a budget of 1.96 lakh crore which is almost $31 billion.

The best part of this is that even the film entertainment industry of India(Bollywood) has started to work in support of the eradication of open defecation problem in India by making a movie named “Toilet” starring Akshay Kumar & Bhumi Pednekar. The movie puts light on the problems of women in rural India as they have to go in the open to defecate and the necessity of building toilets in rural India. It’s nice to see that we have understood the importance of cleanliness and people are spreading awareness about it.
Happier and Healthier Citizens
Hygiene is highly related to the happiness. We feel happy when we are in a clean and hygienic place. It soothes our mind. Hence if the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan campaign succeeds then it will help to make people happier and healthier.

A better world for the next generations
If the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan campaign succeeds then we will.
