The setting of the poem, ‘Evicted by the farmer’, by Zim Mnotoza is the discriminatory land seizures. Robert Mugabe, the president of Zimbabwe orchestrated eviction of farms owned by white farmers on account of which they had to face violence.

The poem depicts the pathetic and sad condition of a white farmer (Robert Smart) caused by the seizure of his long owned property, home, and land. Owing to the seizure, his family is forced to live in the open without any facility and amenity. There is no food, water, and other joys of home and comfortable life. Besides they always lived in the fear of being attacked and chased by violent men of the President. The worst thing about these seizures was these white farmers whose land had been confiscated unlawfully, had to move from one place to another. Their life became chaotic and totally disorganized.

                                                   Summary

The poet lived in the open as his house had been confiscated by the cruel regime; when the sun rose, sun-rays fell lavishly on the house hold articles. When the thunderstorm came, they were at its mercy. The rain washed soot from the cupboards and furniture that had been kept in the open. After the rain the furniture looked brighter as it been washed in rain.

The poet wondered how living in the open could be a house. In the evening daddy came without milk; he broke the news that next morning they were shifting to new grounds. In the morning the cows woke the poet and found his dad packing up to move to new place where they were to live in the open without their house.

This poem is all about the pathetic condition of the white framers.

It deals about their sadness which comes along with the seizure of their own property.

The families have to live in open and have no facilities available for them.

This made their lives hell as they had to move in search of home and food both.
