Given :   Samuel pays a flat cost of $41.50 per month and $5 per gigabyte. He wants to keep his bill at $52.50 per month.

To Find :  Write and solve an equation which can be used to determine x , the number of gigabytes of data Samuel can use while staying within his budget.

Solution:

flat cost  =  $41.50 per month

per gigabyte cost  = $5

=> x  gigabyte cost  = $ 5x

Total cost per month = 41.50  + 5x

Equate total cost

41.50  + 5x  = $52.50

=> 5x = 11

=>  x = 2.2

Samuel can use 2.2  gigabyte while staying within his budget.

37 - 14  = 23 miles more to drive

Drive in 5 days = 5x

5x = 37 - 14

=> 5x = 23

=> x = 4.6  miles per day
