A table of values of a linear function is shown below.
x, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3
y, 10, 7, 4, 1, -2

Find the Y-INTERCEPT and SLOPE and find the EQUATION for the function.

Answer:

  • Equation : y = -3x + 7
  • Slope : -3
  • Y intercept : +7

Step-by-step explanation:

We'll use two set of coordinates from the table to determine the equation of the line. Let's use (0, 7) and (1, 4). It's totally your choice to choose any two set of points.

The equation of a line passing through these two points is :

(y - 7) = [(4-7)/(1-0)]*(x - 0)

y - 7 = -3(x)

y = - 3x + 7 --------(A)

This is the required equation of the line.

Now, for y intercept and slope, compare (A) with y = mx + b , where 'm' is the slope and 'b' is the y intercept. Thus, on comparing, we may conclude that :

m = slope = -3 and b = intercept = 7
