Using Pythagoras theorem,
8 square+(x-1)square=(x+3)square
64+x^2+1-x=x^2+9+6x
65-9=6x+x
56=7x
x=8

shaki2: where do you get 64from
Anonymous: squaring 8
Anonymous: use the whole square formula to simplify (x-1)^2 & (x+3)^2

According to Pythagoras Theorem ,

Side² + Side² = Hypotenuse ²
The sides which make 90° are not Hypotenuse!

according to Pythagoras Theorem ,

We can simplify your question as,

(x-1)²+ 8² = (x+3)²

x²+1-2x + 64 = x²+9+6x

65-9 = 8x

56 = 8x,

x = 7,

Hypotenuse = 7+3 = 10,

The other side = 7-1 = 6 !
