Answer:
Explanation: fixed in place to one another with no movement is the right answer because we know that diamond is very hard substance and it is not compressible and does not change its shape while compression.

Answer:
Atoms in a diamond are __________.
- ☑ closely locked in position and can only vibrate.
- fixed in place to one another with no movement.
- more loosely connected and can collide and move past one another.
- free to move independently and collide frequently.
Why did we chose the first one only?!
We've chosen the first one since it is the characteristic of the particles of matter that they possess kinetic energy or constantly move.
(Proof in answer:-
NCERT also mentions the same, all particles have their own kinetic energy. Refer chapter 1 of Science - IX.)
We didn't chose the other 3s because,
- 2: Particles of matter neither fix at one position nor they don't move.
- 3: Diamond is the strongest matter scientists have ever discovered. So, it is not possible for the particles to loose freely and collide like gases. If such happened, diamond were considered as gases (xD).
- 4: The particles of diamond don't get enough space to move freely or collide frequently. This fourth option is some what similar to the third one, isn't it?
Nunchuck Knowledge Hitz:-
Characteristics of particles of matter:-
- Particles of matter have space between them.
- Particles of matter constantly move.
- Particles of matter attract each other.
