Elsie Brown's "A Shady Plot" has many elements common to a ghost story. It has the essential female ghost, who manifests herself first in bits and pieces, finally to become a complete ghost! Helena the ghost explains that she is the inspiration, which helps Jenkins to write such interesting ghost stories. She then goes on to explain that the excessive use of the Ouija Boards is making all the ghosts tired and they are refusing to help the humans with anything supernatural. Apparently the ghosts are on a strike! Finally, Lavinia's concern that her husband is having an affair with the ghost of Helen of Troy, add to the humorous elements of the story. The culmination of the tale happens with Lavinia confronting the ghost and getting to know that the ghost is indeed of a lady named Helen. However, Lavinia's fears are laid to rest, when Helen explains that she used to live in New York when alive and this makes the entire situation very enjoyable. Moreover, like stories with happy endings "A Shady Plot" also ends with husband an wife reconciling. Thus, even if "A Shady Plot" is a ghost story with many supernatural elements, it is primarily a humorous tale.
