This idiom mainly relates to the spiritual world. When we water the roots, we get the fresh fruits as the outcome. So, when we nourish the plant from inside, a good result is given outside. Watering the roots is invisible. similarly, when we do meditation, yoga etc. we are keeping our inner soul happy and peaceful, but this is also invisible. And this is when the happiness given to our inner soul gets shown up in our face which is the outside world. In short we can say that just like nourishing the plant from inside and the result is given outside, when we make our inner soul happy, the result is given outside as outer hapiness. This is because the outer world is a reflection of the inner world.
