Blue skies and green grass, we cannot have as long as we use excess if gas. The aftermath and fallout of the excessive use of fossil fuels has adversely affected man. Our environment is like a gigantic balloon of transparent substance in which we have our being. When this balloon was created it was filled with pure wholesome gases. However, the black and poisonous smoke from the burning of fossil fuels has damaged this beautiful balloon to such an extent that reclaiming it to its pristine purity and beauty is impossibility. Man, the foolish creature, fails to see that his very existence depends on this balloon. Man's perception about the indispensability of the environment must change, otherwise the balloon will burst and his own existence will end with it. It is a known fact that carbon dioxide, gas released when fossil fuels are burnt, is one of the primary gas responsible for global warming. Rise in temperature of earth has resulted in melting of polar ice caps, flooding of low lying areas and rise in sea levels. If such conditions continue, our planet Earth might face some serious consequences in near future.
Before proceeding any further let’s have a brief look at the disadvantages of using fossil fuels (petrol):
1. Environmental Hazards: Environmental pollution is one of the major disadvantages of fossil fuels. It is a known fact that carbon dioxide gas is released when fossil fuels are burnt. This is one of the primary gases responsible for global warming. Rise in temperature of earth has resulted in melting of polar ice caps, flooding of low lying areas and rise in sea levels. If such conditions continue, our planet Earth might face some serious consequences in near future.
2. Rising Prices and Burden on National Income: India consumed a record high of 2.08 million tonne (MT) of petrol and 6.96 MT of diesel in May 2016. It is estimated that india spends 330 million USD every day on imported fossil fuel. So much national income can be saved by finding an alternative to petrol.
3. 3. Acid Rain: Sulphur dioxide is one of the pollutant that is released when fossil fuels are burnt and is a main cause of acid rain. Acid rain can lead to destruction of monuments made up of brickwork or marbles. Even crops can affected due to acidification of loams.
4. Effects on Human Health: Besides damaging the environment, air pollution can result in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder or COPD and lung cancer. Long-term exposure may increase respiratory infections in general population. Children and the elderly are most vulnerable to fine particulate matter and other airborne toxicants.
These are just some of the many effects of petroleum consumption. Petroleum derived products damage the environment in many other ways also.
Sagacious and frugal use of fossil fuels is the direst need of the hour. The present rate at which the fossil fuels are being used is quite alarming. There won't be left anything for the coming generations. Now the question arises; "Are we to leave a planet totally devoid of fossil fuels to the coming generations?" We will be called highly selfish generation, if we don't leave fuels for the future generations. We need to put our acts together. We must follow the principles of sustainable development. After all it is our responsibility to bequeath a healthy and prosperous planet. Being parents it is our moral responsibility. Let's take care of our planet and use the fossil fuels wisely and frugally!
The best option in front of us at present to tackle the problems posed by fossil fuels is the option of using alternative sources of energy. With energy consumption being the buzzword in developing economies around the world, fears of an energy crisis looming ahead are not totally unfounded. The non-renewable nature of fossil fuels makes complete dependence on these for future energy needs a very dicey affair. Renewable energy sources are the best bet in the scenario. And what can be a better renewable resource than the sun? Besides, it is a renewable and clean energy source. Taking both environmental and economic cost, solar energy works cheaper than fossil fuel resources. Once we master techniques to harness solar energy, it can be a vital source of power generation in our country. We will be benefited in many ways. It will not only save huge amount of national expenditure, but end all environment and health related problems also.As fuel is burned, emissions from the combustion are created. Exactly what type of emissions and the amount, vary widely based on what type of fuel(s) were burned, how the fuel was burned, what type of aftertreatment system (filters) the exhaust passed through and a few other details. Whether you believe emissions have an impact on the environment or not, you probably don’t want to be breathing most emissions directly.
Vehicles of all types (motorcycles, passenger cars, commercial trucks/buses, planes, ships…) create more emissions every day they are in operation, and in some weather conditions, they are idling even when not moving the vehicle. As the global population increases and quality of life improves on some part of the globe, more and more vehicles are putting on more miles, and more deliveries are being made due to increased consumption of goods. Although the earth has provided abundant resources to date, many of these resources are not endless (crude oil for gasoline and diesel fuel for instance).
We can offset some of the impact by working hard to increase the fuel economy and efficiency on all of the different types of vehicles. Yes, there is much work to be done beyond vehicles as well. Shifting from fossil fuels in power plants to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, tidal and others will play a large role as we move into the future. The better the efficiency, the less we mine, refine and deliver as well, which all take more resources to complete.
It is a pleasure working with organizations such as the Carbon War Room, the Rocky Mountain Institute, the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), the International Council for Clean Transportation, and others on a weekly basis to help move industry and society towards a more sustainable future for our children and grandchildren. Every drop of fuel we prevent from being burned by improving fuel efficiency, is another particle of emissions that is not being pushed out an exhaust pipe into the atmosphere. We are doing better now than we have in the past, but there is still plenty of room for improvement
