Set during the times of British Rule, the Narayanpur Incident takes place on the same day that the Quit India Movement took place. While the author’s father, a school teacher, strongly advocates independence; his elder son Mohan retorts to getting things done by using force. Soon, the author’s father is arrested and Mohan goes into hiding. The British take the author’s mother along with them for questioning.

Once the author’s mother is back, she relocates to a different village called Narayanpur and begins life all over again. Although the children resume school, they are more interested in participating in India’s freedom struggle. Very soon, the whole village develops a hatred for the British. When the struggle starts progressing in Narayanpur, the British arrest all the men folk in the village. The women and children are left to take care of themselves.
