Answer:

Area of the shaded region =Area of square - Area of four quadrants.

 = (12cm \times 12cm) - 4( \frac{1}{4} r {}^{2} \pi)cm {}^{2}

 = 144cm {}^{2}  - 4( \frac{1}{4} \times  \frac{22}{7} \times 6 \times 6)cm {}^{2}

 = 144cm {}^{2} - 4(28)cm {}^{2}

 = 144cm {}^{2} - 112cm {}^{2} = 32cm {}^{2}  \\  = 32cm {}^{2}

area \: of \: the \: shaded \: region = 32cm {}^{2}
