I need to figure out what "a" is equal to if x^3 + 8x^2 + ax - 2 is divisible by x-1. I've only divided polynomials with one variable, can anybody help out with this?

When x-1 is a factor of p(x)

x=1

(1)³ + 8(1)² + a(1) - 2 = 0

1+8-2+a=0

9-2+a=0

a=-7
