Nobody starts out being good at anything. There is always a beginning point. The question is whether you choose to stay there or to improve. I would recommend that you read as much as you can. Choose books or stories that are interesting to you, but also look for the highest quality literature you can find, because you will be absorbing information about grammar as you do. Your goal is to improve your ear so that you gain an understanding of what well-written language sounds like. Your other goal is to enjoy yourself. Why read if it isn’t fun?

Another good to improve your understanding of grammar is actually to study another language. Sometimes, when you work to understand another language, you can end up improving your understanding of your own. It is also fine, of course, to study English grammar on its own. Many resources are available. Look for reference books where you can look up specific questions. Invest in a textbook or two. Find grammar blogs on the internet and refer to them when you have a specific question. Talk to people you know, too, but do keep in mind whether they know much about grammar. If they don’t, then you can’t rely on what they say.

Look at your study of English grammar as a process. You don’t want to get discouraged by thinking about how bad you are right now or how far you have to go. Instead, focus on finding one good thing to read that interests you. If you run across a particular sentence and you are curious about its structure, see whether you can find answers about that specific sentence. Make a little progress every day. At some point you will realize that you’ve made substantial progress and that you don’t feel self-conscious about your grammar skills any more.
