Given : I own a bakery. If I put one cake in each box then I have 1 cake too many. If I put 2 cakes per box then I will have 1 box too many.

To find : How many cakes and boxes do I have

Solution:

Let say number of cakes  = C

& number of boxes  = B

If I put one cake in each box then I have 1 cake too many

=> C = B + 1

If I put 2 cakes per box then I will have 1 box too many.

=> C =  2(B - 1)

Equating C

B + 1 = 2(B - 1)

=> B + 1 = 2B - 2

=> B  = 3

=> C  = 4

There  are  4 Cakes  &  3 Boxes
