In April 1946, a minimum Wage Bill (Act) was introduced in Parliament. This bill (Act) was enacted
two years later on 15th march, 1948.This act was a landmark in the labor history of India. With the
implementation of this Act both the State and Central Government agreed on fixation/revision of
rates of minimum wages for their employees. According to Minimum Wages Act (1948), the basic
pay was fixed at Rs-30/- with dearness allowance of Rs.26 per month. These new rates of fixed
salaries came into existence from January 1953 and were subjected to periodic revision. The
government could now fix the salaries for work done within a certain period in a specific field-This
act also defines some terms which helped the citizens to understand and interpret this act.
