I Read the passage and answer the questions (Any 10) (10 Marks)

1.We have all heard about the air, water and sound pollution. But we may

not have heard about light pollution. What is light pollution? Common sense

would suggest that this type of pollution happens when there is too much

light where it is not needed or light which causes discomfort. And this is

correct, as anything that is not beneficial and creates problems for the

environment can be labelled as pollution.

2.Let us look at major light pollution and how they pollute the environment.

Brightly lit advertisement boards, lights from shops, offices and factories

and poorly positioned street lights that direct upward rather than on to the

streets are all examples of air pollutants.

3.There are three major forms of light pollution: sky glow, spillover and

glare. Sky glow is a major problem for meteorologists and astronomers. It is

caused by electric light escaping outwards into the sky and scattering into

the atmosphere creating a glow effect in the sky. Sky glow obstructs the

astronomers from seeing and studying stars, planets and other heavenly

bodies. Meteorologists find it difficult to observe weather phenomena in the

atmosphere. Lights from high-rise buildings, street lights, neon-lit billboards

major contributors for this kind of pollution.

4.Spillover happens when light falls over an area where illumination is not

required. For example, when street light enters your bedroom through the

window at night it can disturb your sleep. It is also waste of electricity.5.As the word suggests glare is the pollution of bright light falling directly on

the eyes. It leads to temporarily blinding effect. Glare from vehicles creates

great disturbance for drivers at night and also pedestrians. More over

nocturnal animals such as owl, bats and moths get confused n the bright

light.

6.Simple steps that can be taken to reduce air pollution is to turn off the

lights when not required, use hoods above the bulbs to reduce light from

fixed lights escaping upwards.

Answer ANY 10 of the following

1. Mention 2 sources of light pollution

2. What should be the correct position of a street light?

3. What is light pollution?

4. For meteorologists and astronomers, which form of light pollution causes

problems?

5. Which spillover is considered waste of electricity?

6. How does Glare compromise safety pf drivers?

7. Which form of light pollution poses a problem for birds and animals that

are active at night?

8. What are major contributors of sky glow?

9. What can be done to reduce wastage of light from fixed lights from

escaping upwards?

10 Identify the word which means the same as animals active at night?

(para 5)

11.One word for people who observe weather phenomena (para 3)

12.One word for people who study the stars, planets and heavenly

bodies (Para 3)
