(i) Role of limestone in the manufacture of pig iron from haematite

The limestone decomposes in the hot furnace, forming calcium oxide. This reacts with the sandy impurities (silicon dioxide) to form a slag. hence limestone is added to the blast furnace.

CaCO₃ -------> CaO + CO₂

(ii) Role of Pine oil in the froth flotation process.

pine oil is used in froth flotation process because it does not have affinity towards water (because of the hydrophobic chemicals as its constituents)and it attracts impurities which can be washed away. Hence pine oil is used as a frother in mineral extraction from ores
