I said, "Are you writing a letter?'' (change the narration)

I asked him/her If he/she was writing a letter.

There are two kinds of speeches.

1. Direct Speech:

In Direct speech, we repeat the exact words by the speaker. Reporting speech is placed between inverted commas. For example, He said, " I have lost my pen".

2. Indirect Speech:

In Indirect Speech, we repeat in our own words what is said by the speaker. generally, we use "said that" in this speech. For example, He said that he had lost his pen.

When we change direct to indirect speech:

Keep in mind its tense while changing the narration.

present simple changed to past simple

present continuous changed to past continuous

present perfect changed to past perfect.

Answer:

I said, "are you writing a leter?"

  • The given direct speech is said to turn into indirect speech and it is mentioned below.

  • I asked if he was writing a letter.

  • The given repoted speech is an example of Interrogative sentence because its auxiliary verb has been placed first and also there is an question mark at the end of the sentence.

  • If reporting verb is written in past indefinite tense : 'I said', and repoted speech is written in present continuous tense: 'are you writing a leter?', then repoted speech of Direct speech will be written in past continuous tense and it is already mentioned in above sentence.

  • For Interrogative Sentence 'asked' is used instead of 'said' or 'said to' and 'if' is used as a linker and also full stop is used instead of question mark at the end of the sentence.

  • For Wh question, Wh words are remained unchange. Because Interrogative Sentence can be formed in many way : using helping verbs, modal auxiliary verbs and Wh words or questions.
