In English there are 2 types of speeches that are:-

1. Direct speech

2. Indirect speech

Explanation !!

1. Direct speech:-

→ Direct speech also known as quoted speech means the actual or exact words that are spoken by a person.

→ The direct speech is always enclosed with inverted commas (" ")

→ There is no change in words.

→ For eg; She said," I don't know anything."

2. Indirect speech:-

→ Indirect speech means reporting what the first person has said or asked.

→ we change a sentence in indirect speech without using first person's actual words.

→ This is also known as reported speech.

→ We change it into the past tense.

For eg; She said that she didn't know anything.

Learning Direct Speech and Indirect Speech:

Suppose your teacher told you that you were the most intelligent boy in your class. You want to convey this to your parents. You can do it in either of these two ways:

  1. My teacher said to me, "You are the most intelligent boy in the class."
  2. My teacher told me that I was the most intelligent boy in the class,

In sentence 1, you have repeated your teacher's exact words. In order to make it clear that you are repeating the words actually spoken by the teacher, they are put within Quotation marks ("... ..."). This method of quoting someone is called Direct Speech or Narration.

In sentence 2, you have put in your own words what the teacher said. This method of quoting someone is called Indirect Speech or Narration.
