I saw a video a week ago, in which when sugar solution is added to pure water, the straight light ray passing through the water bends. We know that sugar solution is having more mass density than pure water, and in the activity, sugar solution has proved to be optically denser than pure water. So, are optical density and mass density related to each other in some way, though they are not the same? Please answer this humble doubt of mine with an appropriate answer (Class 10 physics) _/|\_

Answer:

No,optical density is not related to mass density.

Explanation:

Mass density is related to the heaviness or lightness of an object whereas optical density is related to the speed of light.

When the speed of light decreases when passing from medium 1 to medium2, medium2 is optically denser than medium 1.

I hope this clears your doubt!
