I saw an old woman sitting near my house in the bitter cold . I went to her and to my utter surprise and disbelief it was none other than my mother's eldest sister, my Aunt Pushpa.
Aunt Pushpa was my favourite aunt. She was an octogenarian, a kind hearted and wonderful human being. Whenever I visited her she treated me to the best of home-made food she had cooked specially for me.
I hardly remember Uncle. He had died when I was a toddler leaving Aunt a small house and a three year old son, my cousin Rajib.
Aunt worked as a seamstress and a helping hand day in and day out to raise her son and send him to a good school. My mother helped now and then but we too were not very well off to be of use.
Rajib turned out to be a scholar. He was brilliant and cracked the IIT Entrance exam. On one hand aunt was jubilant but on the other she had to labour more to fill his fees and meet his increased expenditure.
Rajib's acumen fetched him a job abroad. Mother was relieved as it would mean Aunt's hard days were over. Last month Rajib was back from the States. Aunt called to say that he was disposing off their small house, the only refuge of Aunt and taking her to the States.
Rajib had apparently married an American woman there so it was likely he would not return to India.
Mother was happy for Aunt but sad that she would no longer see her aged sister anymore. But life has its own whims. Its twists and turns can never be predicted.
Rajib did take Aunt to the Airport and asked her to stand outside while he made arrangements for departure. My unsuspecting, innocent aunt never realised that his son was leaving her for good with all her savings and her shelter never to return.
The poor old lady waited and waited till she collapsed. The Airport Authorities got her back to her senses . Having lost everything and nowhere to go she gave our address.
That is when I saw the old woman sitting near my house in the bitter cold .
