Actually need has got some medicinal and anti bacterial properties. Putting neem leaves in the container would keep pests away from it. And this help to keep it preserved for longer.

In order to prevent wheat from getting attacked by insects or pests, my mother dropped neem leaves in an iron drum of wheat.
Explanation:
Neem has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial property. Due to this reason it has wide range of application in the field of medicine as well in agriculture. At home Neem leaves are used for home remedial purpose. People use Neem to clean their house; they use it during bathing etc.
Due to its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial property, it is also added to the containers used for storing cereals and grains in order to prevent the entry of insects or pest in to it.
