‘unless’ can’t be used here as you use it to introduce the only circumstances in which an event you are mentioning will not take place or in which a statement you are making is not true.

The better suited conjunction here is ‘if’ as you use it in conditional sentences to introduce the circumstances in which an event or situation might happen, might be happening, or might have happened.
